The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

The staff of the unit "International Cooperation", located in Bremerhaven, is looking for an employee who will support the AWI-based coordination of the EU project EU-PolarNet "Connecting Science and Society" and who will take over the responsibility for the communication and outreach of the project, and invites applications for a

Communications Manager EU-PolarNet

The staff of the unit "International Cooperation" serves the international cooperation of the AWI and supports the initiation of new international collaborations and projects. In addition, the staff represents the institute as coordinator/partner in European and international projects dealing with research coordination or infrastructure development within the EU. This includes the projects EU-PolarNet, ARICE, EUAPA, SIOS and EUROFLEETS+.


  • Maintain the external and internal EU-PolarNet website.
  • Present the project in social media, regularly publish the EU-PolarNet newsletter.
  • Develop press releases and cooperate with national and international journalists.
  • Process and present scientific themes for a non-scientific audience.
  • Support the EU-PolarNet coordinator in the execution of the project by organizing workshops or town hall meetings including their preparation in form and content and the follow-up after the workshop, write minutes in English, and interact regularly with the project partners.
  • Work with stakeholders, develop stakeholder consultations or workshops, interpret and present the results.


  • Master's degree in international project management or a university degree in a field of study relevant to the AWI.
  • Proven experience in communication and outreach, especially in social media communication and content management (Typo3).
  • Knowledge in international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary communication.
  • Experience in working with stakeholders from politics, business and society, especially the Arctic population, is a decisive advantage.
  • Develop press releases and cooperate with national and international journalists.
  • Good knowledge in managing international projects, preferably EU projects is expected.
  • In addition, a strong ability to think strategically combined with the ability to communicate and cooperate, security in dealing with international partners, persuasiveness and very good written and spoken English are expected. The position includes a significant amount of international business travel.

Allgemeine Hinweise

The full-time position is limited to 2 years with a possibility of prolongation and will start as soon as possible. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
